So You Want to be a Project Manager .....

Do I Really Need to Buy Project Management Software?

It's the dilemma we all face – do I really need to shell out hundreds (and sometimes thousands) of dollars for some project management software. Isn't there an easier way? Well – there is, but it depends on the size and complexity of your project.

Leadership and Project Management

One of the more interesting questions I am often asked about project management is: do I need leadership skills to be an effective project manager? And I use the word "effective" carefully, because, to me, all effective project managers have strong leadership skills.

That's not to say you can't become a project manager with poor leadership skills, but you are unlikely to become an effective project manager.

So what is leadership, and can you teach yourself these skills?

Making Tough Decisions - Would You Have Bombed Auschwitz?

One of the key responsibilities of a project manager is to make decisions regarding the project. Most decisions will be relatively simple to make, but there may come a time on a project when you have to make a decision that you are uncomfortable with.

As a Project Manager, you need to be willing to make tough decisions which are in the best interest of the project – you can't be "Mr Nice Guy". And that's not to say you will always make the right decision. Sometimes not all the facts are available, not all the "subject matter experts" are available, or certain facts are either not available at the time or withheld from you.

If The Lord of The Rings Was a Project .....

Let's assume for a moment that the great quest in The Lord Of The Rings was a project. Now that's not as odd as it might sound. Just think of the criteria:

  • they had a clear goal and purpose
  • they had a team of people with defined (if unspoken) roles
  • all of the team needed to work together to achieve the goal
  • there was a definite time constraint in terms of when the goal needed to be achieved

Certainly looks like a project to me..... So, if this is the case, then just who was the Project Manager?

Everyone Has Project Management Skills .... Well Almost Everyone

Project management is simply managing

  • what has to be done;
  • when it needs to be done by;
  • within certain cost constraints.

Did you know that a lot of what we do in our everyday lives is very similar to project management?
